How to apply the recommendations in your LinkedIn assessment

Your report explains what to improve and why it matters. This guide shows where LinkedIn places the controls and how to make common updates without having to hunt through the platform.

Start small. Your assessment is a roadmap, not a deadline. You do not need to work through this guide from top to bottom. Use it when a recommendation becomes your current focus, and make improvements at a pace that fits the rest of your job search and your life.
LinkedIn changes its menus periodically. The wording or exact location may vary slightly between desktop and mobile. These instructions are written for LinkedIn on a desktop browser, where most profile editing is easier.

Edit your headline

Profile → Pencil icon in the introduction card → Headline
  1. Open your LinkedIn profile.
  2. Select the pencil icon in the top introduction section.
  3. Update the Headline field.
  4. Select Save.

Use the headline to communicate role, specialty, value, and direction-not only your current job title.

Edit the About section

Profile → About → Pencil icon
  1. Scroll to About.
  2. Select the pencil icon.
  3. Use short paragraphs and lead with the value you provide.
  4. Add proof, specialties, and the kind of opportunity or connection that would be helpful.
  5. Select Save.

Improve an experience entry

Profile → Experience → Pencil icon → Select the position
  1. Open the Experience section.
  2. Select the pencil icon for the section or position.
  3. Confirm title, employer, dates, location, and employment type.
  4. Rewrite the description around outcomes, scope, and evidence.
  5. Add relevant skills or media when LinkedIn offers those options.
  6. Select Save.

Replace duty-only language with accomplishment language: what changed, how large it was, who benefited, and how the result was measured.

Reorder and feature your skills

Profile → Skills → Pencil icon or Show all skills → More/Edit options
  1. Open the Skills section and select Show all skills.
  2. Select the pencil or edit control.
  3. Look for Reorder, represented on some versions by stacked lines or a drag handle.
  4. Drag the most important skills toward the top.
  5. Prioritize skills that reinforce the roles and level you want next.
  6. Remove obsolete, duplicated, or distracting skills when appropriate.

LinkedIn may limit how many skills appear prominently. The goal is to ensure the first visible skills support your professional positioning rather than merely reflecting older tasks.

Create a cleaner LinkedIn profile URL

Profile → Public profile & URL → Edit your custom URL
  1. Open your profile.
  2. Select Public profile & URL, usually on the right side of the desktop page.
  3. Select the pencil icon beside the custom URL.
  4. Choose a professional version of your name when available.
  5. Save the change and update the link on your resume, email signature, and applications.

Adjust Open to Work settings

Profile introduction → Open to → Finding a new job
  1. Open the profile introduction section.
  2. Select Open to and then Finding a new job, or edit the existing Open to Work box.
  3. Review job titles, workplace types, locations, start date, and employment types.
  4. Choose whether visibility is limited to recruiters or shown to all LinkedIn members.
  5. Save.

Request a recommendation

Profile → Recommendations → Ask for a recommendation
  1. Scroll to Recommendations.
  2. Select Ask for a recommendation.
  3. Choose a person, your relationship, and the role involved.
  4. Personalize the request by reminding them what work or outcome would be most helpful to mention.

Specific requests produce stronger recommendations than a generic "please recommend me."

Update contact information

Profile introduction → Contact info → Pencil icon
  1. Select Contact info near the top of your profile.
  2. Select the pencil icon.
  3. Review email, phone, websites, and other contact methods.
  4. Remove outdated information and confirm that public links work.

Review profile visibility

Settings & Privacy → Visibility
  1. Open Settings & Privacy.
  2. Select Visibility.
  3. Review public profile visibility, profile viewing options, connection visibility, mentions, followers, and activity visibility.
  4. Choose settings that balance privacy with your current career goals.
